Jerry chose to serve his country, joining the Navy in March of 1952, serving as a hardhat diver and second gunner in the Korean Conflict. As a proud patriot he was a charter member of Truckee Meadows VFW Post 3819. He held many post and state positions, including Post Commander. Jerry's dedication to the community was evident through his creation of the VFW 3819 Holiday Food Basket Drive and his U.S. Flag presentations to school children throughout Washoe County. He was honored for his service to veterans and the community by being voted "Mr. VFW" by his peers throughout the state. Jerry was also a member of the Military Order of the Cooties (past Seam Squirrel) which he created a Veterans Affairs Nursing scholarship for the Reno VA hospital, and a member of the American Legion Post 0001.
Jerry's professional life was dedicated to his 32 year career at Nevada Bell. He retired in 1983 as a second line construction manager. Upon retirement from Nevada Bell he worked for Anixter and Black and Veach.
Jerry returned to Reno while on leave from the Navy to marry his high school sweetheart, Lucille Norbeck, on June 2, 1951. Jerry and Lucille spent the past 56 years raising their 3 children and watching their family grow. The Lazzari family has many memorable moments camping on the Feather River, water-skiing on the Delta, and spending time at the ball fields. Jerry's love of sports continued through his children and grandchildren. He was a founding member of Reno Continental Little League, coached in Reno National Little League, and in Reno West Babe Ruth. Jerry also spent many afternoons and evenings coaching his sons and grandchildren from the grandstands.
As a true patriot, Jerry returned to the Lord on the Fourth of July 2008, surrounded by his loving family. He is preceded in death by his father, Hugo, mother, Cora, and many uncles and aunts. Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Lucille, by his three children and nine grandchildren: son, Jerry (Mike, Maggie, Jenny), daughter, Kathi Reed (Randy/ Jeremy (Shannon), Justin) and son, John (Mary Ann/ JW, Zach, Andrea, Pete). He will be dearly missed by his brother-in-law, Wallie Norbeck (Marilyn), nephew, Matt Norbeck (Stacy/ Grace), his extended family and many friends.
